Lauren Zezenski Named Scholar-Athlete at Clarion University

2013 Feb 21

Lauren Elizabeth Zezenski of Bernville, PA, a member of the Women's Tennis team, was among 142 Clarion University student athletes to be honored as scholar-athletes at the 23rd Annual Bob Carlson Scholar Athlete Luncheon Feb. 8 in Gemmell Student Complex.

To be named a 2013 scholar-athlete, student athletes must: achieve a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher; have two consecutive semesters of a 3.2 grade point average or higher in the spring and fall terms of 2012; or be a freshman or new transfer who achieved a 3.2 grade point average or higher in the fall 2012 term.

Dr. Karen M. Whitney, Clarion University president, praised the scholar-athletes.

"To me, as president, there are two games we play -- your sports and the game of being a student. You win at both," she said.

Dave Katis, athletic director, said 43 percent of student athletes earned the designation, the highest in program history.

"As athletic director, nothing makes me prouder than reaching this accomplishment," he said.

Katis presented the annual Carlson Cup Team Award to the men's swimming and diving team. The award goes to the intercollegiate athletic team that shows the biggest overall increase in GPA during the past calendar year. The award is named after Bob Carlson, who started the scholar-athlete luncheon in 1991 and was Clarion's athletic director from 1990 to 2005.

Clarion University is the high-achieving, nationally recognized, comprehensive university that delivers a personal and challenging academic experience.
